Biography

THE SAMURAI OF PROG (or TSOP, for short) was formed in 2009 by Finland-based Italian bassist Marco Bernard. (The band name originates from Marco’s nickname.) Originally conceived as a one-off album (”Undercover”) covering some of Marco’s favorite songs, the project quickly outgrew its original charter, as several of the musicians formed long-lasting associations and a proper band emerged. Finnish drummer and mix engineer Kimmo Pörsti, and USA-based multi-instrumentalist/singer Steve Unruh joined Marco to become a core trio that would invite different guests to join them.

Among others, TSOP albums feature compositions by Oliviero Lacagnina (Latte e Miele), Alessandro Di Benedetti (Inner Prospekt), Marco Grieco, Octavio Stampalia (Jinetes Negros), Luca Scherani, Mimmo Ferri and David Myers. For each album, Marco, Kimmo and Steve have been joined by an ever-rotating cast of high-caliber musicians and guest singers. Guests include Jon Davison (Yes), Roine Stolt (Flower Kings), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Guy LeBlanc (Camel), Robert Webb (England), Ton Scherpenzeel (Camel, Kayak), Linus Kåse (Änglagård), Marco Grieco, Rafael Pacha, Tony Riveryman, Marek Arnold - and many more!

The band has long held the belief that an album is more than the music; it’s an experience which includes poring over the elaborate packaging and booklets which accompany TSOP CDs. These typically feature Ed Unitsky’s fantastical artwork.

Towards the end of the 2010s, Steve Unruh's many commitments prevented him from keeping pace with the other members of The Samurai of Prog. Marco and Kimmo did not want to slow down, because there was a lot of great new material available to develop. So a "side project" "Bernard & Pörsti" was formed for three albums.

Steve joined Marco and Kimmo as full-time member for 2023's "The Man in the Iron Mask," then afterward - and by mutual agreement - withdrew from status as core member of TSOP.
